A graduate of the Ivan Boberskyi Lviv State University of Physical Culture, Yuryi Kovalchuk continues to inscribe his name in the history of modern pentathlon.

At the third stage of the UIPM World Cup 2026, Yuryi Kovalchuk not only won a bronze medal but also set a world record in the laser run.
This historic achievement was recorded on 13 June during the final of the competition held in Budapest. In the decisive discipline, Kovalchuk completed the distance in 9 minutes 58.580 seconds, scoring the maximum 702 points. The result has been officially included in the world records list of the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM).
This performance is especially significant because the record-breaking laser run secured the Ukrainian athlete a place on the podium. Before the start of the final discipline, the athlete coached by Oleh Fialkovych, Vitalii Tarnakin, Andrii Orlikovskyi, Dmytro Kirpulianskyi, and Andrii Kovalchuk (Head of the Department of Shooting and Technical Sports) was only in 13th place among the finalists. However, a brilliant final performance allowed him to make an impressive comeback and win the bronze medal.
The Ukrainian national team also delivered a strong performance. The team, consisting of Yuryi Kovalchuk, Oleksandr Tovkai, and Maksym Aharushev, won the team competition at this stage of the World Cup. The German team placed second, while France took third place.

Thus, the Budapest World Cup stage became exceptionally successful for Ukrainian modern pentathletes, and Yuryi Kovalchuk’s world record stood out as one of the most remarkable achievements of the tournament.
